Question 1

How does SimpFish eliminate aquarium glass glare and reflections?

Accepted Answer

SimpFish cuts tank glass reflections and blur through two on-device camera tools built for aquarium glass. First, the Tap-to-Freeze shutter fires a 120 FPS burst sweep through Apple AVFoundation at 1/180s shutter speed, locking exposure at -0.7 EV so iridescent scales never blow out while freezing the exact millisecond a darting fish turns parallel to the glass. Second, our CoreImage polarized de-glare filter strips away reflections of room lamps, windows, and your sweatpants on the front pane. Unlike the default iPhone camera app, which hunts for focus on water droplets or glass scratches, SimpFish sweeps focal distance from the front glass into the deep tank. You get a tack-sharp aquarium portrait in one second without turning off every lamp in your living room.

Question 2

Does SimpFish require a paid subscription to identify fish?

Accepted Answer

No. SimpFish has zero subscriptions. The app is free to download and free forever for everyday freshwater and saltwater fish identification. The free tier includes unlimited 8, 15, and 25-shot bursts, the 25-slice manual depth scrubber, on-device species identification, unlimited snarky thought bubble generations, stupid fish name presets, and 2-tap high-resolution meme cards. If you want the complete studio, SimpFish Pro is a one-time $4.99 lifetime unlock (Launch Deal, regular $7.99) with Apple Family Sharing included. Paying $4.99 once removes watermarks, unlocks the 60 FPS TikTok and Reel Studio with four viral video modes, enables the 2cm optical macro lens for fish begging on the glass, and expands depth stacking to 40 slices. You never pay a monthly or annual fee.

Question 3

How does on-device AI identify fish species without an internet connection?

Accepted Answer

SimpFish runs 100% on-device using Apple Intelligence Foundation Models and the Apple Vision framework. When you snap a burst, SimpFish locates the fish in every frame, scores sharpness across the eye and fins, and runs local species taxonomy inference on the iPhone Neural Engine. The classifier checks dorsal fin shape, caudal fin geometry, lateral line markings, and body profile across 2,500+ freshwater, marine, and invertebrate species. If you already know what sits in your tank, you can tap Species Lock to pin your exact fish (like Guppy, Betta, or Neon Tetra) so every photo gets instant species-specific jokes. Because the whole pipeline runs on your phone hardware, SimpFish works offline in airplane mode, basement fish rooms, and local fish stores with zero cloud uploads.

Question 4

What kind of thoughts and personas does SimpFish generate?

Accepted Answer

SimpFish pairs species identification with a comedy engine trained on how real aquarium fish behave in your tank. Betta splendens and cichlids talk like petty warlords demanding live bloodworm tributes while plotting violence against a nerite snail. Guppies, platies, and mollies act like starving food gremlins doing the frantic glass shimmy two centimeters from your nose three minutes after dinner. Bristlenose plecos, corydoras, and otocinclus enter a zero-thoughts glass-licking trance while producing two-foot strings of driftwood fiber on freshly vacuumed white sand. Schooling neon tetras panic over the gravel siphon tube. You can also roll famous and stupid fish names like Gill Clinton, Swim Shady, James Pond, or Suck-Lord 3000, and pick from 15 mood tags like 92% Dramatic, Derp, or Food Gremlin.

Question 5

Why do standard smartphone cameras struggle with aquarium photography?

Accepted Answer

Standard phone cameras are tuned for outdoor portraits and stationary pets, not fast fish swimming behind thick glass and water. First, when your guppies or betta rush the front pane to beg for flakes, they sit 2 to 5 centimeters from the lens; the standard iPhone 1x camera cannot focus closer than 20 centimeters, turning your fish into a blurry smudge. Second, Apple Smart HDR blends multiple slow exposures together, creating ghosting on beating pectoral fins. Third, bright aquarium LED bars blow out silver and neon scales while dark substrates trick the camera into slowing the shutter. SimpFish fixes all three problems by switching to the 2cm ultra-wide macro lens for close-up beggars, locking a fast 1/180s sports shutter, and sweeping focus slices across the tank.

Question 6

Can SimpFish identify saltwater corals and rare cichlid morphs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SimpFish includes an on-device biological taxonomy covering over 2,500 freshwater and marine fish, dwarf shrimp, snails, and reef corals. That covers African cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika, South American apistogrammas and discus, fancy livebearers, fancy goldfish, Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp, and monster fish like arowanas and bichirs. For saltwater reef keepers, SimpFish recognizes clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and SPS, LPS, and soft corals including Acropora, Montipora, Euphyllia torches and hammers, and Zoanthids. Whether you are checking compatibility on a mystery tank at your local fish store or logging a new frag in your display tank, SimpFish gives you the common hobbyist trade name, scientific binomial name, and a spot-on personality roast.

Question 7

How does SimpFish fix blue LED lighting blowout in reef tanks?

Accepted Answer

Saltwater reef tanks run under heavy 420 to 450 nanometer royal blue and actinic LED channels to make coral proteins fluoresce. Phone camera sensors panic under pure actinic light, flooding the blue channel and turning glowing green torches and orange scolymias into an unreadable purple haze. Reef hobbyists usually buy clip-on orange plastic lenses just to take a passable photo. SimpFish builds a computational Actinic De-Blue orange filter and a Polarized De-Glare filter straight into the camera pipeline. With one tap, the image processor pulls back oversaturated royal blue wavelengths and restores natural white balance, letting green, yellow, and orange coral fluorescence pop in your share cards and 60 FPS reef reels without strapping plastic gadgets to your iPhone.

Question 8

Is my aquarium data and photography kept private?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SimpFish is private by architecture and runs with zero cloud servers. Every burst photo, 20-slice or 40-slice depth sweep, species identification, thought bubble, and 60 FPS video reel is processed and stored locally on your iPhone. We do not require an account, we do not ask for your email address, and we do not embed third-party ad trackers or analytics SDKs. Photos of your living room reflections, your tank collection, and your camera roll never leave your phone unless you tap the share sheet to post a card or video yourself. The only network call the app ever makes is Apple StoreKit receipt verification when you buy or restore the one-time $4.99 SimpFish Pro unlock.

Question 9

How do I export and share fish meme cards to Reddit or Instagram?

Accepted Answer

Sharing takes two taps from the Studio screen. Once you pick your sharpest frame on the depth scrubber and choose a thought bubble style (Modern, Oval, Cloud, Action, or glowing Neon Tank), tap Share Card to export a crisp vertical portrait card or tap Export Reel to render a 60 FPS MP4 video with animated fish-tracked bubbles. Cards and reels are sized for Reddit communities like r/Aquariums, r/bettafish, r/PlantedTank, and r/shrimptank, plus TikTok, Instagram Reels, Discord, and iMessage. Free cards include a small corner watermark. Upgrading to SimpFish Pro for $4.99 once removes all watermarks and unlocks all four social video modes: Majestic vs Derp, Hyper Zoom Loop, Slow-Mo, and Classic.

Question 10

Can I edit or reroll the fish's generated thought monologue?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Inside the Studio editor, you have total control over every word on the card. Tap Reroll Thought to generate a fresh species-aware roast on the spot, or tap one of the quick preset pills to cycle through unhinged thoughts with zero waiting. Tap the Stupid Name or Famous Name buttons to rename your fish to classics like Gill Clinton, Swim Shady, James Pond, Fin Diesel, Barnaby the Glutton, or Suck-Lord 3000. You can also type your own custom name and custom monologue if your fish just did something ridiculous like uprooting your Monte Carlo carpet or picking a fight with an algae magnet, and pair it with 15 mood tags and 5 bubble themes.

Question 11

What iPhone hardware and iOS version is required?

Accepted Answer

SimpFish runs on iPhones with iOS 18.0 or later. High-speed burst capture, the 20-slice and 25-slice free depth scrubber, the 40-slice Pro depth stack, and 60 FPS Reel rendering run on Apple Silicon iPhones using AVFoundation, Metal, and CoreImage. The 2cm Optical Macro mode uses the ultra-wide macro autofocus system found on iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro Max. On-device species identification runs on the Apple Neural Engine across all supported iPhones, while devices with Apple Intelligence Foundation Models gain dynamic context-aware monologue variations alongside our curated species comedy bank. Everything runs locally with instant startup right from your Home Screen or Control Center camera shortcut.

Question 12

How does SimpFish compare to Picture Fish and generic fishing apps?

Accepted Answer

Outdoor fishing apps like Fishbrain are built for anglers holding a bass on a boat dock, not aquarists shooting a two-inch neon tetra through low-iron glass. Meanwhile, generic scanner apps like Picture Fish push $39.99/year auto-renewing subscriptions, upload your photos to cloud servers, have zero optical controls for tank glass reflections or close-up begging fish, and routinely call a fancy guppy an Atlantic salmon. SimpFish is purpose-built for aquarium hobbyists. You get a real 2cm macro and depth-sweeping aquarium camera, accurate ornamental fish ID, a hilarious thought bubble and TikTok Reel studio, a generous free tier, and a one-time $4.99 lifetime Pro unlock instead of another recurring subscription.
